Oakville

Suburb in St Louis County, eastern-central Missouri, USA, on the Mississippi River, 19 km/12 mi southwest of downtown St Louis; population (1990) 31,800. It is an expanding residential community.

Oakville

Town in Halton Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, Canada, on Bronte Creek and the west end of Lake Ontario, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Toronto and adjacent to southwest Mississauga; population (1991) 114,700. A fast-growing industrial port and residential suburb, it contains one of Canada's largest (Ford) automobile plants, and also manufactures glass, chemicals, electrical machinery, and petroleum and rubber products. The Canadian Open golf championship is held at the Glen Abbey course.

Settlement accompanied the establishment of shipyards in 1830, and the town was incorporated in 1857. The community was consolidated with the township of Trafalgar in 1962. Mazo de la Roche's 15-novel saga of the Whiteoaks of Jalna is set in the area.
