Oberhausen

Coal-mining city in the Ruhr Valley, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 29 km/18 mi northeast of Düsseldorf; population (2005 est) 218,900. Industries include iron, steel, mechanical and chemical engineering, plastics, and glass. It lies on the Rhine–Herne Canal.

The town originated in 1846 as a halt on the Cologne–Minden railway. Its outskirts are a continuation of those of Duisburg and Essen. Oberhausen grew with the development of coal mining and iron and steel smelting. In 1973 it was decided to preserve the surviving miners' colonies, the oldest of which is Kolonie-Eisenheim (1844).
