Oberlin

Town in Lorain County, northern-central Ohio, USA, 11 km/7 mi southwest of Elyria; population (1990) 8,200. It lies in an agricultural region specializing in market gardening, and dairy and poultry farming. The life of the town revolves around Oberlin College, founded in 1833 as the first coeducational liberal arts college in the world, and noted for its conservatory of music.

Oberlin was an antislavery centre before the American Civil War and an important station on the Underground Railroad network, providing sanctuary and assistance for escaped black slaves. It has also been a base for reform and religious movements, including temperance, women's suffrage, and evangelism.
