Oberthür, Charles (1819–1895)

German harpist and composer. After various orchestral engagements in Germany and Switzerland he settled in London in 1844, as a performer and teacher.

Vocal

opera Floris von Namur (1840); Mass St Philip Neri; cantatas The Pilgrim Queen, The Red Cross Knight, Lady Jane Grey (1881–86).

Instrumental

overture Rübezahl, overture for Shakespeare's Macbeth (1852) and others; Loreley and concertino for harp and orchestra; trios for harp, violin and cello, quartets for harps; many harp solos.
