Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio

Opera by Verdi (libretto by A Piazza, altered by B Merelli and T Solera), Verdi's first opera, produced at La Scala in Milan on 17 November 1839. The story concerns Count Ricardo, who is to marry Cuniza. But after learning of his earlier affair with Leonora, Cuniza demands that he marry Leonora instead. Oberto, Leonora's father, is killed in a duel with Ricardo, who, stricken with guilt, leaves the country, while Leonora enters a convent.
