Obie Awards

Annual awards for Off-Broadway theatre by the Village Voice weekly newspaper. Started in 1956, the Obies help to publicize alternative theatre in New York.

The Obie Awards, so named as an abbreviation for Off-Broadway (O-B), were launched by Village Voice founder Jerry Tallmer. Award categories change frequently, but generally awards are given for acting, directing, writing, choreography, music, and design. Special awards and grants also honour a body of work or a particular theatre or company. Off-Off Broadway theatre has also been included since 1964.
