Obwalden

Demi-canton of central Switzerland; area 491 sq km/189 sq mi; population (1999 est) 32,000. It occupies the western portion of the former canton of Unterwalden. Its capital is Sarnen, situated on Lake Sarnen at the foot of the Melchtal Mountains. The Sarner River flows through it, and the Kerns Forest separates it from the demi-canton of Nidwalden. Engelberg, a detached commune in the heart of the Swiss Alps, is a popular winter and summer tourist resort. Agricultural activities take up a third of the land; it is primarily a dairy region. The population is mainly Roman Catholic and German-speaking.
