Ocala

City and administrative headquarters of Marion County, north-central Florida, USA, southeast of Gainesville; population (2000) 45,900. It is a marketing and shipping centre for the citrus, poultry, cotton, and tobacco products grown in the surrounding area. Thoroughbred horses are also raised in the region. Tourism is vital to the economy. Its other industries include fertilizer production, the processing of dairy products, limestone, and phosphate, and the manufacture of wood products, mobile homes, fire trucks, sewer pipes, and clothing. Ocala is home to Central Florida Community College (1957).

The city grew up around Fort King, built in 1827.
