Ocean City| Resort town in Worcester County, southeastern Maryland, USA, on an Atlantic barrier beach just north of Assateague Island, 45 km/28 mi east of Salisbury; population (2000) 7,200. To the south Ocean City Inlet, connects Assawoman and Sinepuxent bays with the Atlantic. It is Maryland's largest ocean resort and a seafood shipping point. Tourist facilities include marlin fishing, water sports, and a boardwalk amusement district. Ocean City developed after the railway reached the area in 1878, and is now the eastern terminus of the US 50 interstate highway. |
Ocean City| Resort town in Cape May County, New Jersey, USA, on the Peck Beach peninsula, 16 km/10 mi southwest of Atlantic City; population (1990) 15,500. The 13 km/8 mi–long peninsula forms a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Great Egg Harbor Bay. Established as a summer resort by Christian ministers in 1879, the town became a fashionable family beach community. |
