Ocean County

County of eastern New Jersey, USA; area 1,660 sq km/641 sq mi; population (1990) 433,200. It incorporates Long Beach Island and the Island Beach peninsula, enclosing Barnegat Bay to the north and Little Egg Harbor to the south. A portion of the county is in the Pine Barrens wilderness area. Its seat is Toms River. A number of New Jersey's most popular resorts are situated on the county's long shoreline, and the coastal economy includes fishing and shellfishing. Inland sections are largely agricultural, producing market garden crops, apples and other fruits, dairy products, and poultry. There is some manufacturing, particularly around the largest communities, Toms River, Lakehurst, and Lakewood.
