Of or pertaining to the open ocean, as opposed to bottom or shore areas. Pelagic sediment is fine-grained fragmental material that has settled from the surface waters, usually the siliceous and calcareous skeletal remains (see ooze) of marine organisms, such as radiolarians and foraminifera.
