Ochs, Adolph Simon

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Ochs, Adolph Simon (1858–1935)

US newspaper publisher. In 1896 he gained control of the then faltering New York Times and transformed it into a serious, authoritative publication. Among Ochs's innovations were a yearly index and a weekly book-review section.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Tennessee, Ochs began his career in the newspaper industry as an office boy for the Knoxville Chronicle 1869. Moving to Chattanooga, he worked at various jobs before borrowing funds to purchase the Chattanooga Times. Ochs was successful with this paper and in 1891 founded the Southern Associated Press, later moving to take over The New York Times.
