Malabar Coast

Coastal area of Kerala state, India, lying between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats; about 65 km/40 mi west–east, 725 km/450 mi north–south. A fertile area with heavy rains, it produces rice, food grains, coconuts, rubber, spices; also teak, ebony, and other woods. Lagoons fringe the shore. A district of Tamil Nadu transferred in 1956 to Kerala was formerly called the Malabar Coast. Mayalayam is the main language spoken.
