Oddsson, David (1948- )

Icelandic politician, prime minister 1991-2004. A member of the right-of-centre Independence Party, he was made vice chair of the party in 1989 and chair in 1991, when he succeeded Thorsteinn Pálsson as premier.

Oddsson began his career in local politics, becoming mayor of Reykjavik in 1982. Outside politics, he has an established reputation as a stage and TV dramatist.
