Odendaalsrus

Town in Free State, South Africa, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Kroonstad; population (district, 1991) 97,600. The town has a small airfield and is linked by rail to Klerksdorp and Welkom. There is a power station nearby at Vierfontein.

In April 1946 the then richest gold reef in the world was struck on the farm Geduld, 4 km/2.5 mi from Odendaalsrus. The gold reef was less than 1,200 m/3,937 ft deep and assayed at 30.048 grammes of gold per metric tonne of ore (Rand ore runs at about 6g per metric tonne).
