Odinga, Oginga

    0.02 sec.

Odinga, (Ajuma) Oginga (1912–1994)

Kenyan politician. He promoted Kenyan independence and Jomo Kenyatta as the nationalist leader. In 1960 he became vice-president of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) and was involved in drafting the constitution for this new party. He was minister for home affairs, vice-president, and minister without portfolio in the government of the independent Kenya after 1964.

He subsequently became known as a radical, believing that there should be a more equitable distribution of wealth and nationalization of the economy. To this end he mobilized support for the Kenya People's Union (KPU), which led to his imprisonment and future exclusion from any significant political role.
