Oecolampadius, Johann Hussgen

    0.01 sec.

Oecolampadius, Johann Hussgen (1482–1531)

German theologian and reformer. He studied at Bologna, Heidelberg, and Tübingen, and became an early supporter of Martin Luther, preaching at Basel Cathedral and working for the publisher Froben on such projects as Erasmus' Greek edition of the New Testament.

After a period of religious doubt (during which he withdrew to a monastery) he became a professor at Basel University and an active figure in the Reformation movement, persuading Bern to join the reformers. He also attended the Colloquy of Marburg in 1529 with Ulrich Zwingli.
