oersted

C.g.s. unit of magnetic field strength, now replaced by the SI unit ampere per meter. It is equal to a force of one dyne acting upon a unit magnetic pole in a vacuum. The Earth's magnetic field is about 0.5 oersted; the field near the poles of a small bar magnet is several hundred oersteds; and a powerful electromagnet can have a field strength of 30,000 oersteds.
