karaoke

Amateur singing in public to prerecorded backing tapes. Karaoke originated in Japan and spread to other parts of the world in the 1980s. Karaoke machines are jukeboxes of backing tracks to well-known popular songs, usually with a microphone attached and accompanying lyrics and video graphics displayed on a screen.

In Japan, where karaoke machines have been installed not only in bars but also in taxis, karaoke had become a £1.1-billion industry by 1991. Karaoke machines can hold up to 4,000 songs with on-screen lyrics.
