Offenbach

City in Hesse, Germany, on the south bank of the River Main, 10 km/6 mi east of Frankfurt; population (2005 est) 119,400. Offenbach produces leather goods and artificial fibres, and there are engineering industries.

Offenbach's commercial prosperity was promoted by the influx of Huguenot refugees (Protestants fleeing religious intolerance in France and the Low Countries) in the 17th century.

There are leather and shoe museums here, and an annual Leather Fair is held. On the bank of the River Main is an early Renaissance castle (1564–78).
