Office of Fair Trading

UK non-ministerial government department run by the director-general and established in 1973 to monitor compliance with the Fair Trading Act 1973. Since then the OFT's mandate has broadened to encompass legislation in other areas such as monopolies, consumer affairs and credit, restrictive trade practices, anticompetitive practices, monopolies and mergers, and takeover bids.

The USA has a Bureau of Consumer Protection with similar scope. It enforces a variety of consumer protection laws enacted by Congress, as well as trade regulation rules issued by the Federal Trade Commission.
