Ogallala

Seat of Keith County, western Nebraska, USA, on the South Platte River, 83 km/52 mi west of North Platte; population (1990) 5,100. After the arrival of the Union Pacific railway in 1867, Ogallala became a major cattle shipping depot at the end of the livestock trail from Texas, and developed a reputation as a rowdy cow town. It is now an agricultural processing and distribution point, with some light industry and tourism.
