Ogbomosho

Industrial city and commercial centre in Oyo State, western Nigeria, 80 km/50 mi northeast of Ibadan; population (2007 est) 945,100. It is one of Nigeria's largest cities. Products include cattle, staple crops, cotton, and palm oil. There are tobacco and craft industries, and shoe, textile, and food processing factories.

It is situated on the plateau of Yorubaland, in the savannah zone at the intersection of roads from Ilorin, Oyo, Oshogbo, and Ikoyi. The town was founded by the Yoruba in the mid-17th century as an outpost of the Oyo Empire, and did not grow significantly until settled by Oyo refugees from the Fulani jihad (holy war). After Ibadan's victory over the Fulani in 1840, Ogbomosho allied itself with Ibadan.
