Ogdensburg

Town in St Lawrence County, northern New York State, USA, on the St Lawrence River, at the mouth of the Oswegatchie River; population (1990) 13,500. It is linked to Ontario, Canada, by the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge. The town is a major distribution centre for coal, oil, and gas. Industry includes the manufacture of paper, wood, and aluminum products, and office equipment and supplies. Educational and cultural institutions include the Mater Dei (1960) and Wadhams Hall (1924) colleges, and the Frederic Remington Art Museum.

Ogdensburg was a fort and trading post, occupied alternately by the French and British until the 1790s, and recaptured briefly by the British during the war of 1812. On August 17–18 1940, US president F D Roosevelt and Canadian prime minister W L Mackenzie King created the Permanent Joint Board of Defense between the US and Canada in the Ogdensburg Declaration.
