Ogilby, John

    0.07 sec.

Ogilby, John (1600–1676)

English map-maker. He produced the first road map in Britain, Britannia (1675), which showed major roads in strip form. These maps were freshly surveyed, and included accurate details of bridges, rivers, and towns. Ogilby concentrated on roads radiating out from London. His atlas was also an innovation in using the statute mile, introduced in 1593 but not in widespread use at that time. His maps remained the standard for almost 100 years.
