Ohrid| Town in Macedonia, near the Albanian border, situated on the shore of Lake Ohrid; population (1994 est) 44,000. It is on the site of an ancient Greek colony and is one of the oldest towns in the region. Its buildings include a 10th-century fortress and an 11th-century church. Sts Cyril and Methodius, creators of the Slavonic alphabet, are believed to have worked here. |
