Solingen

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 10 km/6 mi southeast of Düsseldorf; population (1995) 165,700. It was once a major producer of swords and today makes high-quality steel for razor blades, scissors, and cutlery. In the Middle Ages it was known for its sword blades. Spanning the Wupper Valley to the east is the Müngsten Bridge, the highest railway bridge in Germany (107 m/351 ft high).
