Oil City| Town in Venango County, northwestern Pennsylvania, USA, on the Allegheny River, at the mouth of Oil Creek, 113 km/70 mi northeast of Pittsburgh; population (1990) 11,900. With the discovery of oil in 1859 at Titusville, 19 km/12 mi to the northeast, Oil City grew rapidly to become a major oil producing, refining, and distribution centre. Other activities include the provision of financial services, and the manufacture of oilfield equipment, steel, glass, metal products, paints, and gas engines. |
