Oil City

Town in Venango County, northwestern Pennsylvania, USA, on the Allegheny River, at the mouth of Oil Creek, 113 km/70 mi northeast of Pittsburgh; population (1990) 11,900. With the discovery of oil in 1859 at Titusville, 19 km/12 mi to the northeast, Oil City grew rapidly to become a major oil producing, refining, and distribution centre. Oil City was founded on the site of a Seneca village. It is the seat of a branch of Clarion State College.
