Oita

Seaport and capital of Oita prefecture, on Beppu Bay in the northeast of Kyushu island, Japan, 170 km/106 mi east of Nagasaki; population (1998 est) 429,700. Industries include metallurgy, pulp, oil refining, and petrochemicals. It is a major transportation centre.

Takasakiyama, a nearby mountain, has a colony of 2,000 wild monkeys.

The Portuguese navigator Fernao Mendes Pinto, landed at the port in 1543 and is believed to have introduced guns to Japan.
