Ojukwu, (Chukwuemeka) Odumegwu (1933– )

Nigerian politician and soldier. Appointed military governor of the mainly Ibo-speaking Eastern Region of Nigeria following the 1966 coup, he proclaimed the Eastern Region the independent Republic of Biafra in May 1967, precipitating the Biafran civil war. After acting as head of government and supreme commander for three years, his forces were finally defeated in 1970, and he fled to the Côte d'Ivoire. He returned to Nigeria in 1982, but an attempt to return to politics led to two years' imprisonment, and he was banned from standing for president in the 1993 elections.

Ojukwu was educated in church schools in Lagos and at Oxford University. He joined the Nigerian army in 1957 and, after attending military college in the UK, served in the Nigerian force in the UN Congo operations.
