Oki Islands

Group of islands lying in the Sea of Japan, north of Shimane prefecture, Japan. The group has a coastline of 290 km/180 mi and covers an area of 348 sq km/134 sq mi. Of the four islands, Dogo is the largest. Its chief town is Saigo. The islands were formerly used as a place of political exile. Emperor Go-Daigo (1288–1339) escaped from there in 1333 to raise his second revolt against shogun rule.
