Okmulgee

Seat of Okmulgee County, eastern-central Oklahoma, USA, 59 km/37 mi south of Tulsa; population (1990) 13,400. It is a refining centre for the area's oil and natural gas fields. Other industries include the processing of meat and agricultural produce, and the manufacture of oilfield equipment, glass, and furniture. Okmulgee was the capital of the Creek Nation (1868-1907), and is the site of an annual Creek Nation Festival; a council house (1878) is still used for tribal meetings.

Oil was first discovered nearby in 1904, bringing on a boom in the town's prosperity.
