Ōkubo, Toshimichi (1831–1878)

Japanese samurai leader from Satsuma province in southern Japan, whose opposition to the Tokugawa shogunate made him a leader in the Meiji restoration 1866–88. He served as finance and home minister in the Meiji government, but was assassinated by a former samurai from Satsuma in May 1878.
