Oléron, Ile d'

Island in the Atlantic Ocean, off the southwest coast of France and part of the département of Charente-Maritime; area 170 sq km/66 sq mi; population (1990) 18,500. Its greatest length is 29 km/18 mi and breadth 11 km/7 mi. The island produces corn and wine; salt is collected from the salt marshes, and fishing and tourism are important. The principal towns are St-Pierre and Le Château d'Oléron.
