Olathe

Seat of Johnson County, northeastern Kansas, USA, 32 km/20 mi southwest of downtown Kansas City; population (1990) 63,400. A processing and shipping point for produce and livestock, it also manufactures leather goods, chemicals, farm machinery, plastics, and electronics systems. Olathe was established in the 1850s on land previously settled by the Shawnee.

The town became capital of the Kansas Territory after 1858. It was largely destroyed by William Quantrill's Confederate raiders in 1861, but was rebuilt after the Civil War. Mid-America Nazarene College was founded here in 1966.
