Old Believers

Section of the Russian Orthodox Church that was excommunicated 1667 for refusing to accept the liturgical reforms of the Moscow Patriarch Nikon, particularly the new way of crossing oneself during prayer. Much persecuted, the Old Believers are still strong in many country areas of Russia where their initial following was based.
