Castilla la Vieja

Former region of north central Spain, called Vieja (‘Old’) because it was the first part of Castile to be recovered from the Moors. It included the provinces of Avila, Burgos, Logroño, Santander, Segovia, and Soria, and extended north from the Sierra Guadarrama in the form of an elevated plateau, with an average height of 850 m/2,800 ft.
