| There are important archaeological sites 5 km/3 mi from Oldcastle. On Slieve na Caillighe, a range of hills also known as the Loughcrew Hills, is a group of 30 Neolithic chambered cairns, with ornamentation on some of the stones, tumuli, a ring fort, and other earthworks and pillar stones. There is also a group of passage graves on the hills of Cairnbane East and Cairnbane West. |
| Loughcrew was the birthplace of Oliver Plunkett (1629–81), an archbishop of Armagh who was executed and later canonized. |
