Oldenbarneveldt, Johan van (1547–1619)

Dutch politician, a leading figure in the Netherlands' struggle for independence from Spain. He helped William the Silent negotiate the Union of Utrecht in 1579.

He presided over the vast expansion of overseas trade and the formation of the Dutch Dutch East India Company. Religious strife with Calvinists effected his downfall, and he was arrested and executed.
