Oldfield, Barney

Oldfield, Barney (Berna Eli) (1878–1946)

US racing-car driver. Henry Ford employed him as a driver for his experimental race car 1902 and in the following year Oldfield set the world land speed record of 60 mph/96.6 kph. In 1910 he reached a speed in excess of 130 mph/209 kph.

Born in Wauseon, Ohio, USA, Oldfield established a reputation as a successful bicycle racer as a youth. A familiar figure at races across the country, he retired from competitive driving 1918 and spent the rest of his career as a consultant to various automobile and tyre makers.
