Oldham, Arthur (William) (1926– )

English composer. He was, for a time, music director at the Mercury Theatre and to the Ballet Rambert, but later devoted himself wholly to composition.

He studied composition with Herbert Howells and piano with Kathleen Long at the Royal College of Music in London; he also studied privately with Britten.

Works

Ballet and dramatic

four ballets, including Bonne-Bouche (1952); incidental music for Ronald Duncan's This Way to the Tomb.

Choral and orchestral

six anthems; orchestral music, including Sinfonietta for wind band (1974).

Other

violin and piano sonata, songs.
