Olds, Ransom Eli

    0.15 sec.

Olds, Ransom Eli (1864–1950)

US car manufacturer. In 1895 he produced a gas-powered car and in the following year founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company. Reorganizing the operation as the Olds Motor Works, he produced his popular Oldsmobiles from 1899 in Detroit. He pioneered the assembly-line method of car production that would later be refined by Henry Ford.

Olds was born in Geneva, Ohio, and raised in Michigan. He experimented with steam-powered prototype automobiles from 1886. After selling the Olds Motor Works 1904, Olds established the Reo Motor Car Company, serving as its president 1904–24 and chair of the board 1924–36.
