Olivine under a polarized microscope. It is a rock-forming mineral abundant in gabbros and basalts.

Greenish mineral, magnesium iron silicate, (Mg,Fe)2SiO4. It is a rock-forming mineral, present in, for example, peridotite, gabbro, and basalt. Olivine is called peridot when pale green and transparent, and used in jewellery.
