Ollenhauer, Erich

Ollenhauer, Erich (1901–1963)

German politician, chair of the Social Democrats (SDP) from 1952. He succeeded Kurt Schumacher as SDP chair and guided the party towards a more moderate and popular stance in the country.

Ollenhauer joined the SDP in 1918. He went to Czechoslovakia and was deprived of German citizenship in 1935. He took refuge in France 1938–41 and Britain 1941–46. After World War II he returned to West Germany.
