Oller, Francisco

Oller, Francisco (1833–1917)

Puerto Rican painter. He painted landscapes and scenes of Puerto Rican life, his best-known work being El Velorio/The Wake (1893), which was shown at the Paris Salon in 1895.

He was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He studied in Spain and France in the 1850s and 1860s, where he was a friend of Courbet, Cézanne, and Pissarro and had paintings exhibited at the Paris salon in 1864–65, before returning to Puerto Rico.
