Olynthus

Ancient city in Chalcidice, the three-pronged peninsula of Macedonia. It was first inhabited by a Thracian tribe and was later subject to Persia about 512–479 BC. It was then occupied by Greeks from neighbouring cities and it joined the Delian League. In 424 BC, it withdrew from the league and became the leading city in a confederation which by 357 BC included 32 states. On the outbreak of war between Philip II of Macedon and the Greeks 357, Olynthus was allied with Macedonia, but later sided with Athens and was destroyed by Philip 348 BC.
