Omar, Sheikh Abdel-Rahman (1938– )

Egyptian cleric who campaigns for the establishment of a theocratic Muslim state. He is associated with the Gama'a Islamic group. He actively supported the Mujahedin in the Afghan War.

During the 1980s Sheikh Omar was imprisoned several times for his connection with militant Islamic groups opposed to the Egyptian government. Members of Gama'a have been charged in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bomb in New York.
