Onega, Lake

Lake in the far northwestern Russian Federation, near the Finnish border. With an area of some 9,600 sq km/3,700 sq mi (excluding islands), it is the second-largest lake in Europe. Lake Onega is connected by the River Svir with Lake Ladoga (the largest lake in Europe) and the Baltic Sea, and by artificial waterways with the White Sea and the Volga (the ‘Mariinsk’ system).

Kizhi Island, with its ancient wooden buildings, is located in the north of the lake.
