Oneida County

County of central New York State, USA; area 3,157 sq km/1,219 sq mi; population (1990) 250,800. Its seat and largest city is Utica. Traversed by the New York State Barge Canal and the Mohawk River, it has diverse industries, mainly centred around Utica and Rome. Its southern section contains many small towns, some suburban, some largely agricultural. Dairying, market gardening, and livestock rearing flourish in the nonindustrialized areas. Resorts have developed around the eastern shores of Oneida Lake in the west, and around the smaller Adirondack lakes of the northeast. Fort Stanwix and other historic sites of the American Revolution are located in the county.
