Oneonta

Town in Otsego County, central New York State, USA, on the Susquehanna River, in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, 72 km/45 mi southeast of Utica; population (1990) 13,600. A distribution hub, it also manufactures plastics, clothing, and electronic components. Hartwick College (1797), the State University of New York College at Oneonta (1887), and the National Soccer Hall of Fame are situated here.

Oneonta was settled in the late 1700s as McDonald's Bridge or Mill, and took its present name in 1832. Following the arrival of the Albany and Susquehanna railway in 1865, railway shops were established. In 1883 the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen was founded in the town.
